SUNDAY SERMON
SERMON NOTES:
General Faith vs Wonder Working Faith
1 Corinthians 12:7-11 - Amplified Bible
7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit [the spiritual illumination and the enabling of the Holy Spirit] for the common good. 8 To one is given through the [Holy] Spirit [the power to speak] the message of wisdom, and to another [the power to express] the word of knowledge and understanding according to the same Spirit; 9 to another [wonder-working] faith [is given] by the same [Holy] Spirit, and to another the [extraordinary] gifts of healings by the one Spirit; 10 and to another the working of [a]miracles, and to another prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people], and to another discernment of spirits [the ability to distinguish sound, godly doctrine from the deceptive doctrine of man-made religions and cults], to another various kinds of [unknown] tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues. 11 All these things [the gifts, the achievements, the abilities, the empowering] are brought about by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, distributing to each one individually just as He chooses.
1 Corinthians 12:31 - New King James Version
31 But earnestly desire the [a]best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.
Explain the difference between general saving faith vs special faith
Galatians 5:22-23 - New King James Version
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [a]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
The fruit of the spirit is to produces God’s character in us (becoming more like God)
(loyalty in marriage)
The gifts of the spirit are to demonstrate God’s power
Express God’s glory and manifest His will on the earth
John 14:12-13 - Amplified Bible
12 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, anyone who believes in Me [as Savior] will also do the things that I do; and he will do even greater things than these [in extent and outreach], because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in My name [[a]as My representative], this I will do, so that the Father may be glorified and celebrated in the Son.
Romans 12:3 - New King James Version
3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
General faith received at salvation
Luke 17:5-6 - Amplified Bible
5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith [our ability to confidently trust in God and in His power].” 6 And the Lord said, “If you [a]have [confident, abiding] faith in God [even as small] as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree [which has very strong roots], ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea’; and [if the request was in agreement with the will of God] it would have obeyed you.
Your mustard seed faith will defeat the enemy every time
Romans 10:17 - Amplified Bible
17 So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.
Supernatural power in God’s word for increased faith
You have ability to grow your measure of general faith by choosing to spend more time with His word
Romans 10:8-10 - Amplified Bible
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word [the message, the basis] of faith which we preach— 9 because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation.
Matthew 10:1 - New King James Version
10 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
Matthew 10:8 - New King James Version
8 Heal the sick, [a]cleanse the lepers, [b]raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
Many of the gifts will work together, for example Lazarus -raise the dead
Jesus- had special faith to say Lazarus was just sleeping, then called him out of the tomb, “Come Forth”
Working of miracles- Lazarus spirit came back to his body
Gifts of healings to heal him of whatever illness killed him (or he would die again)
Special faith- exercise our general/simple faith and trusting God to go beyond general faith
Examples of Special faith
Raise the dead, cast out demons, laying on of hands, deliverance from danger, receiving blessings or human utterances, supernatural provision
